MOT Decision Welcomed by IAM

The Department for Transport’s decision to retain an annual MOT test for car insurance customers – rather than swapping to a two-year interval – has been welcomed by the Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM).Neil Greig, director of the IAM Trust, states the UK has one of the highest MOT failure rates in Europe. He adds the government may have made the correct decision on safety grounds, but suggests it has yet to prove that consumers are getting value for money.”That can only be done by consistent high quality implementation of the MOT scheme and transparent reporting of future trends so that we have the full picture, Mr Grieg concludes.According to an IAM survey carried out in 2007, car insurance customers view the MOT test as a vital road safety measure, but suspected that failures were influenced by garages’ desires to carry out unnecessary work.It is important not to leave the car unlocked when leaving it at the petrol pump to pay at the kiosk, it has been advised. British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba) technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill made his comments while discussing the risk of car theft during winter months, when some people do not re-lock their vehicle while it is warming up on the driveway. He said a problem can be that drivers do not think to take adequate security measures in places like this or petrol stations.
