A jacket is a long sleeved, hip or waist length item of clothing for the upper body. They shoudn’t be confused with a coat which is longer in length and heavier in weight. Although jackets can be fashionable, they can also serve as protective clothing.

Jackets have probably the widest selection of varieties and styles than any other garment available on the market. They are generally divided into two categories: men’s and women’s although it has been known for some women to wear men’s jackets out of a preference for the durability and functional aspects.

Ladies jackets tend to be more geared to how it looks rather than how it wears or serves the wearer. Men’s jackets although pretty fashionable, can also be stronger made and in much darker colours. Additional material can be used inside (the lining) for warmth and ventilation.

The type of material the jacket is made of also makes a difference to how it looks and how well it lasts over a long period of time. Denim, for example, is pretty strong and can last for many years without going out of favour. Other jackets are made for certain activities like horse-riding, sporting events and dealing with the elements.
