Bowling Scratch: Improve Your Approach

Maybe you are a social bowler willing to take on this intricate sport with new respect. When bowling is your situation, you’ve stumbled upon a crucial turning point in your development as a dedicated student of the game. This “Next Steps” handbook to bowling perfection can help get you there. The guys in a nearby bowling pro shop want you reach their bowling skills. We like to say, you get back what you put in (from the ball return – hah). Just kidding. Okay, if only it were that simple. It’s all good, we can have you throwing the best way we know how.

First, invest a little in custom fit necessities, especially good bowling shoes. It’s not a sales pitch, it actually matters. There’s a reason its our number 1 recommendation, have your favorite ball fitted, and you can make more of your practice time. A precision fitted bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. Of course another critical matter is wearing comfortable bowling shoes which have shoe laces!

Since you went ahead and bought good bowling equipment, listen to the second best piece of bowling advice: taking aim. If you hold the ball, don’t shoot for your actual target, the pins. Line up using the arrows like a sling shot. The reason? It is easier to hit a target a good deal nearer. To take full advantage, make sure you stand in the same position on the wood each time. With that consistency you can make small adjustements on your aim using the arrows in the lane.

What about spin, for specific action on the pins? That’s another “Next Steps” bowling hint. They get traction with the pricy reactive ball. Might be surprising that serious bowlers regularly roll several types of bowling balls to roll heavy hooks, selected precisely for many factors. Just a bit of caution: intermediates might want to keep it simple, and avoid a ball that is too heavy for you. A lot of avid bowlers use bowling balls made for special resin surface. Steer clear of them, because these pro bowling balls might make even decent bowlers appear a fool. With these tips you’re on the right track. I’ll be back with another 3 in the August edition.

My family and I bowl with our team (the “Strykers”) a group from a league for Bowling Pro Shop just outside Kansas City. I chime in with tips to novice bowlers on the web and at the bowling center. Also, I gotta wave hello at my teammates back home. Sorry I can’t be there.
