A Primer on Magnification Products
Most people neglect the section in our population who’re visually impaired. We are inclined to group others as either having adequate eyesight, needing glasses or contact lenses, or are blind. Yet there is another segment of people: the visually impaired. So how much loss of sight do the visually impaired have?
Visual impairment is vision loss (to a person) to such an extent as to be recognised as a disability. This kind of vision loss results from either congenital, degenerative conditions, trauma, or disease that cannot be sorted out by conventional means, such as medication, wearing glasses, or surgery.
However, there are a number of products available for the visually impaired to aid those with visual impairment with their day to day life, such as Magnification products for the visually impaired, and screenreaders to assist those with visual impairment when surfing the internet.
An issue the visually impaired have with offline shopping is that many stores don’t think about visual impairment, and so often neglect the opportunity of making further sales from this segment of society. For example, signs are designed using small fonts, store lighting is dim, or the outlet is jumbled with products, making it tricky for the visually impaired to move about. Helping the visually impaired supports your business as you include a fundamental segment of the population into your range of potential customers.
It is good news that the UK government are acknowledging the requirements of the handicapped more and more via the The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
